Gravity model wins ORR Grand Union Trains access
The Office of Rail and Road has awarded Grand Union Trains rights to operate between Wales and London after a gravity model was used to forecast demand at three stations rather than relying on the MOIRA industry software, which tends to underestimate the demand impacts of large changes in journey times.
GUT will become the first open access operator on the Great Western Main Line. It has rights to operate five services each way daily between Carmarthen and London Paddington for 10 years from December 2024. It will order new bi-mode trains for the services and plans to enter a partnership with Spanish national rail operator Renfe to operate the services, with backing from Spanish private equity firm Serena Industrial Partners.
