Drakeford envisages hydrogen trains in Wales
Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford has told the Senedd that there are plans to use hydrogen to fuel trains in Wales, as part of a project to generate the gas at the former Trecwn naval armaments depot in Pembrokeshire.
Wales is currently taking delivery of £800m of new diesel and electric trains. Hydrogen did not feature in the 15-year Wales and Borders rail plan unveiled in 2018. Some of the new diesel multiple units are designed for easy conversion to electric in the next two or three decades, if funding can be found for further route electrification.
