WelTAG studies to evaluate 50mph lessons

The Welsh Government will use its transport appraisal guidance to evaluate the 50mph limits it introduced in 2018 to deliver air quality improvements. The results could lead to amendments to the existing scheme and are expected to provide evidence for future scheme appraisals.

The 50mph limits required installation of average speed cameras because of initial poor compliance, which continued after additional messages were displayed to explain the purpose of the limits. From September 2021 advisory letters were sent to drivers who had exceeded the limit. Full enforcement commenced in April, in order to help to achieve the NO2 reductions the government is required to make in the shortest possible time.
