LTNs ‘can trigger debate on the purpose of residential streets’
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) can act as a “trigger for a wider discourse on the character and function of residential areas”, according to a study by a team from the Transport Studies Unit at the University of Oxford. LTNs can have a “profound effects on large population areas”, said the report’s authors Geoffrey Dudley, David Banister and Tim Schwanen.
“The 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, and the subsequent lockdowns, provided a key opportunity for the UK Government to introduce the £220m (originally Emergency) Active Travel Fund (ATF), to reallocate residential road space to pedestrians and cyclists,” said the authors.
